SPLIT’s Statement on Vaccination in Pediatric Liver Transplantation, October 2025
The Society of Pediatric Liver Transplantation (SPLIT) affirms the essential role of vaccination in protecting pediatric liver transplant candidates and recipients. Children with advanced liver disease and those receiving immunosuppressive therapy after transplantation are at substantially increased risk for severe morbidity and mortality from vaccine-preventable infections. Timely and appropriate immunization, administered in accordance with established protocols, remains a cornerstone of preventive care in this vulnerable population.
The Society of Pediatric Liver Transplantation has written this statement as an initial community response to the Health Resources and Services Administration’s OPTN Modernization Initiative. We look forward to engaging with HRSA, the OPTN, and the transplant community on initiatives to modernize and improve transplant in the U.S. – particularly for children awaiting and after life-saving liver transplant.
In the transplant community, our hope is to see our nation work together to improve the
process we have now, and first and foremost, prioritize children. We need to start thinking of the children first when it comes to creating the policies that shape our transplant system. No child should be left without a viable organ
option!
