DICG Webinar - November 4 - Ethics and Burden of Proof

Many of the distinguished speakers from this webinar will also be attending MESOT 2025. If you’ll be there, take a moment to introduce yourself, share ideas, and continue the conversations started here. Events like MESOT are a wonderful opportunity to connect with colleagues and build collaborations that advance transplantation across the region.

Be sure to say hello to Marcelle McPhaden (TTS Executive Director), who will also be in attendance — she’s looking forward to meeting many of you in person!

MESOT 2025 - 50th Anniversary of Organ Transplantation in Turkey

At MESOT 2025, TTS expertise is front and center. The Pre-Congress Workshop—led by Prof. Mehmet Haberal with course chairs Marcelo Cantarovich and Andrea Herrera-Gayol—features a distinguished faculty including Jeremy Chapman, John Fung, Annika Tibell, Stefan Tullius, Andreas Tzakis, and Marti Manyalich. Across the main program, TTS leaders shape sessions and committees spanning ethics/education, kidney and liver transplantation, immunology, and registries, underscoring TTS’s impact on science, clinical practice, and governance. The agenda also includes a dedicated DICG (Declaration of Istanbul) ethics session focused on combating organ trafficking and advancing equitable practice.

Physical Frailty and Sarcopenia in Liver Transplantation: How Should They Be Assessed and Addressed?
Physical frailty and sarcopenia are increasingly associated with morbidity and 2-fold mortality in patients with advanced chronic liver disease awaiting liver transplantation (LT). Furthermore, they significantly affect post-LT recovery and patients’ ability to return to independent daily living, including employment. The increased prevalence of metabolic risk factors (ie, obesity, diabetes) and the aging population have contributed to the prevalence of physical frailty and the complexity of the multidisciplinary team decision-making that surrounds LT.
Proteinuria Remains a Significant Hurdle to Successful Pig Kidney Xenotransplantation Despite an Effective Immunosuppressive Regimen
This study evaluated the efficacy of an optimized immunosuppressive regimen, including a higher dose of anti-CD154 monoclonal antibody (TNX-1500), in prolonging graft survival in pig-to-baboon kidney xenotransplantation. Despite advances in genetic engineering of organ-source pigs and immunosuppressive regimens, we report that the development of nephrotic-range proteinuria remains a significant problem.

Intercenter Variability in the Application of Biopsy-based Transcriptomics in Kidney Transplantation
Biopsy-based transcriptomics (BBT) was implemented in Central Europe in 2022 to improve kidney transplant diagnostics. Differences in diagnostic practices across transplant centers remain underexplored.
Pretransplant Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor Treatment for Intermediate-advanced Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Living Donor Liver Transplantation
The use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) as a downstaging or bridging therapy for liver transplantation (LT) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is gaining momentum. However, evidence regarding the feasibility and safety of pre-LT ICI therapy remains limited and controversial. This study presents our experience with patients with intermediate-advanced HCC who were downstaged using regimens incorporating ICIs and subsequently underwent living donor LT.
