Just Released - Transplantation - July 2023 Issue

In this month we farewell one of the great pioneers of transplantation who brought focus onto the sciences of transplantation. A previous long term editor of this journal Sir Peter Morris's contributions are revealed. The issue also contains important analyses of non HLA antibodies in kidney transplant, outstanding reviews of expanding lung donation, the use of checkpoint inhibitors and much more. The impact of donation on subsequent pregnancies will help us all to counsel younger female potential donors.

Dear Colleagues,

With the conclusion of the 18th Congress of the Middle East Society for Organ Transplantation (MESOT 2023) that took place on May 24-26, 2023, I would like to express my sincere appreciation for those who attended and contributied at the meeting.

From its inception, the goals of MESOT have been to encourage the development of scientifically and ethically superior organ transplantation activities across the globe. Therefore, The MESOT International Congress is the major international transplant congress and attracts a broad range of health professionals.

MESOT 2023 Congress which was endorsed by The Transplantation Society (TTS), The Turkish Transplantation Society (TOND) and The Turkic World Transplantation Society (TDTD)  proved to be a great success, with high positive feedback from all who were in attendance. The total number of registrations for the MESOT Congress was 320 from 38 countries. A total of 55 Invited Lectures, 38 Oral and 116 Poster Presentations were scheduled for the congress.

The scientific program incorporated a wide range of topics designed to provide an innovative and comprehensive overview of the latest developments in the field of experimental and clinical transplantation in the Middle East and the world. I hope it has provided valuable insights for our colleagues in the transplant field across the globe.

Once again, thank you for your support it was an honor to host this important Congress.

Sincerely,

Mehmet Haberal, MD, FACS (Hon), FICS (Hon),
FASA (Hon), FIMSA (Hon), Hon FRCS (Glasg)

Using Social Media to Promote Cutting-edge Research in Transplantation: Results of an International Survey
Social media has radically reshaped modern scientific discourse. The field of transplantation is unique in intersecting medicine, technology, immunology, ethics, and public policy like no other. Social media can rapidly disseminate this information globally. This was most evident during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic when transplant teams published several studies demonstrating the effects of vaccinations in posttransplant patients.
TikTok and Transplantation: A Trending Opportunity
To the Editor — Social media (SoMe) has transformed mass communication, enabling users to communicate instantaneously and reach large, engaged audiences. TikTok, the fastest growing SoMe platform, allows users to create and share short-form videos. Unlike other platforms, TikTok users can amass large followings with a single viral video.
Frailty: A Strong Impact on Lung Transplant Outcomes?
Frailty, defined as an increased risk of adverse health-related outcomes because of a maladaptive response to stress, is common among patients with advanced lung disease awaiting lung transplantation. Clinical features of frailty include weakness, decreased agility, fatigue, physical inactivity, and loss of muscle mass. Frailty has profound prognostic ramifications on lung transplant candidates, including an increased risk of waitlist mortality and decreased posttransplant survival for up to 4 y posttransplant.

Using Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging to Quantify Perfusion Quality in Kidney and Pancreas Grafts on Vascular Reperfusion: A Proof-of-Principle Study
The accuracy of intraoperative graft perfusion assessment still remains subjective, with doppler examination being the only objective adjunct. Laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI) has been used to assess intraoperative blood flow in neurosurgery and in various surgical specialties. Despite its ability to accurately quantify perfusion at the microvascular level, it has not been clinically evaluated in kidney/kidney-pancreas transplantation for perfusion characterization. We aimed to evaluate the utility of LSCI and identify objective parameters that can be quantified at reperfusion.
