TTS 2026 - Help Celebrate the People Behind TTS

Celebrate the People Behind TTS

For 60 years, TTS has been more than science — it has been a global community of people dedicated to saving and improving lives. As part of our 60 Years in 60+ Stories series, we invite members of our global community to share their reflections on TTS, transplantation, and the people, moments, and milestones that have shaped our field.

We also want to celebrate the talents and creativity within our community. Whether through art, music, writing, photography, video, or another creative expression, we invite you to share the personal passions and talents that make our community so vibrant.

Deadline to submit: July 15, 2026

Do you have a favourite TTS memory, photo, video, or story to share? Do you paint, photograph, write, sing, compose music, create, perform, cook, garden, build, or have a hidden talent or personal outlet?

Selected submissions will be featured in a special digital anniversary showcase in the TTS 2026 Exhibit Hall. Delegates will also be able to scan a QR code to access the online gallery through the TTS 2026 website/web app and enjoy the stories, artwork, videos, and reflections wherever they are.

This initiative celebrates the people behind TTS — their creativity, memories, resilience, community, and connection.

Together, these stories and creative contributions will help us honor our past, celebrate our present, and inspire our future.

Just Released - Transplantation Direct - June 2026

We are pleased this month to welcome you to the June issue of Transplantation Direct, covering a wide range of topics. Machine perfusion of organs and tissues remains a hot subject, with articles in human studies looking at outcomes from transplant recipients receiving DCD grafts in the context of ex-situ oxygenated hypothermic perfusion, examining normothermic machine perfusion use in simultaneous liver and kidney grafts to improve renal recovery posttransplant, and testing whether recirculating urine during kidney perfusion enhances energy balance and organ recovery; in a VCA hindlimb rodent model, normothermic machine perfusion is tested for effects on development of acute rejection. Elsewhere in kidney transplantation, we have an opinion piece on transplant candidacy and malignancy in elderly transplant recipients, a study on opioid use and pain management in donors after living donation, and on using sequential CT-based morphometry to assess muscular loss and kidney dysfunction after transplantation. For the liver transplant community, we feature articles on using SOFT Cluster Scoring to detect posttransplant risks, on an assessment as to whether weight-loss drugs such as GLP-1 agonists improve outcomes in recipients, and on what considerations need to be given to transplant recipients with a prior history of bariatric surgery. The all-too-common effects of CLAD continue to be critical in lung transplantation; in the pursuit of new therapeutic insights, researchers report on a new mouse model that shows CLAD-like pathology. Infectious disease is also covered in this issue, where a review of norovirus infection management in transplant recipients is provided, and a study from South Africa looks at the incidence of BK virus in HIV-positive kidney transplant patients. Finally, a multi-site experience is reported on the use of leadless Helix-fixation pacemakers in transplant recipients. We are pleased that Transplantation Direct continues to provide open access to these articles and much more in the field of transplantation; visit our website for all the details.

TTS Awards Nominations – Deadline extended to June 19!

The nomination deadline for the TTS Awards has been extended to June 19.

Please also note that the Starzl criteria have now evolved to reflect a broader, more inclusive, multidisciplinary vision of transplantation. While the award has traditionally recognised outstanding contributions in areas including drug development, tissue typing, organ preservation, and surgical innovation, the 2026 criteria have extended beyond these domains to acknowledge transformational and impactful contributions in clinical care, basic and translational science, health policy, and health systems delivery in transplantation. We encourage nominations that reflect the diverse global expertise, collaboration, and leadership that continue to advance the field and improve access to transplantation and patient outcomes worldwide.

Untargeted Plasma Proteomic Signatures and Late Graft Failure in Kidney Transplant Recipients
Long-term kidney graft monitoring still relies on delayed clinical indicators such as eGFR and proteinuria, which change only after substantial injury. To investigate biological processes not captured by standard metrics, we hypothesized that plasma proteomics could identify biomarkers and reveal the pathways underlying the pathological process, thereby providing independent prognostic value for late graft failure.
Direct Measurement of Organ Procurement Organization Donor Potential Using Comprehensive Referral Analysis: Feasibility and Implications for Assessing Organ Procurement Organization Performance
Previous methods for assessing organ procurement organization (OPO) performance have not been reliable, making it necessary to develop a direct measurement of donation service area donor potential. The purpose of this study was to use a previously validated direct measurement of donor potential using referral data from 6 US OPOs to assess its usability as an alternative to current methods.

Leadless Helix-fixation Pacemakers in Solid Organ Transplant Recipients: A Multisite Experience
Solid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs) are at heightened risk for cardiovascular implantable electronic device-related complications, particularly infection, because of chronic immunosuppression and comorbidities. Although leadless pacemakers (LPs) reduce infection risk by eliminating transvenous leads and generator pockets, adoption in SOTRs has remained limited, largely because earlier systems were restricted to single-chamber ventricular pacing and lacked physiologic atrioventricular synchrony. The helix-fixation Aveir LP platform enables atrial, ventricular, and dual-chamber leadless pacing, but clinical experience in transplant recipients remains limited.
Effect of Donor-recipient Size on Graft Growth in Pediatric Donor-to-pediatric Recipient Kidney Transplantation
Kidney transplantation is the optimal treatment for pediatric end-stage kidney disease, yet donor shortages have driven the use of pediatric donor kidneys through pediatric donor-to-pediatric recipient (PTP) kidney transplantation. This study aimed to investigate the effect of donor-recipient size on graft growth in PTP kidney transplantation.
