Hidden Markov Models Offer a Powerful Approach for Understanding Gene Regulation Mechanisms Relevant for Organ Transplantation
The human genome contains sequences of DNA enriched in cytosine-guanine dinucleotides known as CpG islands (CGIs). CGIs play a crucial role in gene regulation and expression, making them an important target for genetic therapies. In this article, hidden Markov models (HMMs) and adaptive window techniques (AWTs) were used to identify CGIs in MUC5B and DSP genes.
Decision-making Tool for Early Liver Retransplantation: The Early Liver Retransplantation Score
Retransplantation (ReLT) is the only therapeutic option to treat early liver graft failure and to achieve the best graft/recipient combination that is essential to optimize patient and graft survival. This national study aimed to establish a donor and a recipient early liver retransplantation score (ELRS) to predict the risk of graft loss after early ReLT.

Recipient Outcomes of Split Heterotopic Bilateral Lobar Transplantation: Case Series
The scarcity of matched donor lungs significantly limits lung transplantation (LTx) for children and small adult patients. The use of a lobe or bi-lobe from a larger donor (ie, traditional lobar lung transplantation [LLTx]) has overcome this difficulty but invariably leads to some wastage of the remaining lobe(s).
Establishing and Validating a Biomolecular Signature of Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury in a Porcine Pancreas Allotransplantation Model
Despite considerable advancement in surgical and immunological management in pancreas transplantation, graft pancreatitis remains a feared complication after pancreas transplantation. Identification of molecular mechanisms of underlying ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) in pancreas transplantation could, therefore, pave the path for targeted therapy to improve surgical outcomes. The aim of the study was to identify and validate the genes differentially expressed in the early period (24 h) of graft reperfusion in pancreas transplantation.

In a first, pig lung survives and functions—briefly—in a person

Aug. 25 - In a small step forward for the long-struggling field of xenotransplantation, surgeons in China have put a pig lung into a human. The man was brain-dead and the organ only lasted 9 days. But even human-to-human lung transplants are notoriously difficult, so the xenotransplant’s modest survival and brief period of functioning underscores the promise of organs from pigs that have been genetically edited to make their tissues more compatible with humans. The work is “exciting as a first look at what happens when a pig lung is put into a human being,” says Richard Pierson III, a surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital who has performed dozens of pig-to-baboon lung transfers to test the strategy. The xenotransplant also adds momentum to a field that has recently seen three gene-edited pig kidneys survive for months in living people. And it showcases China’s intent to become a leader in developing this potential source of organs.
