Just Released - Transplantation Direct - September Issue

The September Transplantation Direct issue covers a wide variety of issues in our field. Machine perfusion (MP) is represented by two studies: one where energy use is analyzed during DCD heart preparation, and a second aiming to resuscitate hearts after long periods of cold storage before transplantation. In kidney transplantation, studies are presented on the effects of robotic surgery regarding delayed graft function, risk stratification methods to predict DSA development, dialysis duration effects on outcomes after living donation, a pre-emptive MMF reduction strategy, and a study on desensitization of anti-HLA class II antibodies in the situation of living kidney donation. This issue also includes reviews in liver transplantation on intra-patient immunosuppression variability related to outcomes and the effects of donor obesity on transplant outcomes. In addition, an original article is presented on open abdominal management of complex cases in liver transplant recipients. In pediatrics, a detailed experience is provided on combined liver and heart transplantation. With COVID still in our midst, this issue includes a large center experience with COVID in lung transplant recipients, and we have another report on recent era post-acute sequelae after Omicron-type infections. For transplant programs, there is an article on the use of a 3-Dimensional Trainer to train transplant surgeons. On the topic of organ donation, data is presented on Asian American attitudes to organ donation (resulting in an educational video output) and on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander views towards transplantation. We welcome you to visit our open-access Transplantation Direct website for full details on these and other articles.

WTC 2025 - Call For Program Sessions

On behalf of the American Society of Transplantation, the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, and The Transplantation Society, we are delighted to invite you to submit your ideas for program sessions for the World Transplant Congress 2025 (WTC 2025), to be held from August 2-6, 2025, in San Francisco, California, USA.

The WTC will harness our global collective intelligence to address the human challenges of end organ failure. We aim to:

  • Share global expertise in clinical and scientific knowledge
  • Address key clinical issues across the continuum of care, from access to long-term follow-up
  • Examine new technologies' impact and utility
  • Promote guidance based on best evidence
  • Consider global challenges addressed by local/regional innovation
  • Foster collaboration in an environment promoting interaction and teamwork irrespective of geographic, economic, cultural, clinical, and academic barriers

We are looking for programs that will be interactive, include global themes, speakers, and moderators, and focus on cutting-edge topics that address transplantation and end organ failure.

All members of the transplantation community, including clinicians, researchers, health care professionals, and policymakers, are invited to submit proposals. Submissions are encouraged from both seasoned experts and emerging voices in the field.

Important Dates
  • Call for Program Topics Opens: August 1, 2024
  • Call for Topics Deadline: October 11, 2024
  • Program Notification: November 1, 2024

We encourage proposals that explore new advancements in transplantation. Please ensure your proposal is complete, as incomplete proposals will not be considered, and no extensions will be granted beyond the October 11, 2024, 11:59 PM PST deadline.

Session Formats Include
  • Keynote Sessions
  • Oral Sessions
  • Panel Discussions
  • Ask the Experts
  • Lightning Talks
  • Case Study Sessions
  • Informal Interactive Sessions (e.g., Campfire Sessions)
  • Open – Suggest a Format
Program Topics/Themes
We invite you to propose session topics around the broad spectrum of clinical, basic, and societal infrastructure-related topics in transplantation. Please select the topic that best applies to your submission from the domains listed in the guidelines.
Submission Process

Proposals must be submitted via the official World Transplant Congress 2025 submission portal. Ensure all parts of the submission are complete and adhere to the guidelines provided.

For more detailed information on submission guidelines, session formats, and topics, please review the full Call for Program Sessions document linked below:

Legal and Regulatory Challenges for Emerging Regenerative Medicine Solutions for Diabetes
Regenerative medicine solutions for type 1 diabetes are a rapidly developing field of medical technology. To date, these solutions have been principally cell-based treatments and at present, in Europe, these therapies are regulated under European Union regulations for advanced therapy medicinal products. But now, new emerging technology combining cellular therapy with medical devices is under development. The potential of this novel hybrid model to create a bioartificial pancreas to treat type 1 diabetes is tantalizing. However, incorporating medical devices creates a further layer of regulatory complexity.
Five-day Wearable Respiratory Support With a Novel Ambulatory Pulmonary Assist System in an Awake Ovine Model
The pulmonary assist system (PAS) is a wearable respiratory support system that is currently under development for patients with chronic lung disease as a bridge to lung transplantation or as destination therapy. This study evaluates the long-term performance and biocompatibility of the PAS in a 5-d awake, ovine model.

Optimizing DCD Liver Grafts With Prolonged Warm Ischemic Time Using Stabilized Plasmin in a Static Cold Storage Orthotopic Rat Liver Transplant Model
The clinical success of liver transplantation has led to increased demand, requiring further expansion of the donor pool. Therapeutic interventions to optimize organs from donation after circulatory death (DCD) have significant potential to mitigate the organ shortage. Dysfunction in DCD liver grafts is mediated by microvascular thrombosis during the warm ischemic period, and strategies that reduce this thrombotic burden may improve graft function. We hypothesized that the administration of the fibrinolytic enzyme plasmin to the donor organ during the cold storage period would reduce the thrombotic burden and improve DCD liver graft function.
Mycophenolate Dose Reduction in Tacrolimus-based Regimens and Long-term Kidney Transplant Outcomes in Australia and New Zealand
Mycophenolate dose reduction (MDR) is associated with acute rejection and transplant failure in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). The optimal dose to prevent rejection and reduce complications remains poorly defined in tacrolimus-based regimens.
